Some information about Simplex Ladders
Simplex Step Ladders are highly sought after by Interior Designers and decerning home owners, due to their beautiful appearance and good quality.
Simplex Step Ladders were manufactured by Taylor and Wilson of Clayton, near Accrington Lancashire, a company that was formed in 1866. The company finally closed the doors of their Royal Mill, in Atlas Street in 1962
When not is use Simplex ladders will stand upright against a wall
These ladders were produced over many years, however generally the examples I have available are Edwardian.
I have found many ladders that have been treated or altered, significantly reducing their value and appearance.
Many may have been infected with wood worm or been dipped in baths of Caustic Soda, an acid is often used to remove paint - a process which reduces the strength of the joints significantly. Caustic Soda is used in paper making to disolve the glue which binds together wood fibers (Lignin) and is clearly not suitable to use on furniture although it remains a commonly used method of cleaning up old ladders before sale. None of my ladders have been treated in this manner nor have they been infected with worm.
